My journey as an independent songwriter

A Life Felt Through Words. For as long as I can remember, I've experienced the world through emotion

As a young girl, I often wondered why I seemed to feel everything so deeply. I could find myself in tears reading a book, watching a film or simply listening to someone tell their story. It didn't matter whether the moment was beautiful or heartbreaking; I felt it as though I were experiencing it myself.

I began keeping a diary when I was eleven years old. Looking back, those entries were less like diary notes and more like chapters from a novel. I didn't just record what happened. I described how it felt, what it meant and all the little details that stayed with me.

Eventually, I wrote a poem. Then another, and another. Before long, words were coming to me at all hours, sometimes even in my sleep.

As life moved forward, work and family became my priorities, and my writing quietly slipped into the background. But the part of me that noticed everything, questioned everything and felt everything never really went away.

Rediscovering My Love of Writing

Years later, an unexpected personal betrayal brought me back to writing.

After searching for ways to make sense of what I was feeling, I found myself putting pen to paper again. This time, the words arrived as song lyrics.

What began as a way of working through a difficult experience quickly became something much more. One song led to another, and before I knew it, I had built a catalogue of more than 40 original songs.

Around the same time, I discovered Heated Rivalry, a story that reignited my love of romance, storytelling and the extraordinary complexity of human relationships. It reminded me how powerful a story can be when the emotions behind it feel genuine, and how even the smallest moments between people can carry enormous meaning.

Those experiences helped shape Brand New Woman, an independent songwriting project built around original lyrics, emotional honesty and a lifelong fascination with the human experience.

Finding Stories in Everyday Life

My inspiration comes from almost everywhere.

Everyday struggles, unexpected kindness, grief, first love, heartbreak, quiet acts of courage and the moments of happiness that sometimes pass before we realise how much they matter.

I've always been fascinated by what lies beneath the surface of things. A passing expression, a conversation or something glimpsed from the corner of my eye can leave me wondering about the story behind it.

What happened before that moment? What is someone feeling but not saying? What does it mean to them? That curiosity is at the heart of how I write.

I usually begin with a single emotion or experience and build the story around it. I need quiet, time to think and the freedom to explore different ways of expressing the same feeling.

Sometimes I'll write ten versions of a line before finding the one that says exactly what I mean.

I know a song is finished when the words flow naturally, when I can read them over and over without anything feeling out of place.

For me, every word needs to earn its place.

The Stories and Music That Shaped Me

My love of storytelling began with classic literature and old Hollywood films. The Brontë sisters, Jane Austen and Thomas Hardy introduced me to stories filled with longing, vulnerability, sacrifice and complicated relationships. I was drawn to the way their characters could reveal so much through what they said, and sometimes even more through what they left unsaid.

I remember watching It's a Wonderful Life when I was nine years old and crying throughout the film. What stayed with me was the overwhelming sense of someone feeling unseen, believing their existence had made little difference, while the world carried on around them. Even at that age, I was deeply affected by the emotional weight of that idea.

Music has always had a similar effect on me. My tastes are eclectic, ranging from traditional and contemporary folk to country, indie, jazz, pop and disco. Artists such as Van Morrison and Mumford & Sons have influenced my appreciation for honest, expressive storytelling, but I find inspiration across many different genres.

I'm less concerned with musical labels than with whether a song makes me feel something. My own writing often leans towards stripped-back, intimate storytelling, although I enjoy exploring different musical styles to suit the emotion and atmosphere of each song.

The Journey of Brand New Woman

Since launching Brand New Woman in May 2026, the project has grown beyond anything I initially imagined.

In just a few months, my Facebook content has generated more than 2.8 million views and 170,000 engagements, while my original music has accumulated over 66,000 streams on Spotify alone, reaching listeners across more than 38 countries. With my songs also available through Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music and other streaming platforms, it's been incredibly rewarding to see my writing find its way to people around the world.

But what means the most to me isn't the numbers. It's hearing from someone who tells me a song brought them to tears, reminded them of someone they love or helped them make sense of something they were going through.

Knowing that an emotion I tried to capture in words has reached another person in the way I intended is an extraordinary feeling.

One of my favourite songs, Choose Me, explores the vulnerability of offering someone your whole, honest self and wanting, more than anything, for them to truly see you.

It's the kind of emotional honesty I try to bring to everything I write.

Writing for Artists, Film and Storytelling

My ambition is to take my songwriting beyond my own releases and collaborate with people who have stories they want to tell.

I'd love to see my lyrics interpreted by solo artists, bands and choirs, or become part of the emotional landscape of a film, television series or other creative production.

I'm particularly interested in the relationship between music and visual storytelling: how the right words at the right moment can express something a character cannot say, reveal an emotion beneath a scene or preserve a feeling long after the moment has passed. I believe the most memorable songs don't simply accompany a story. They become part of how we remember it.

I welcome opportunities to collaborate with artists, performers, filmmakers and other creatives who value thoughtful, emotionally honest writing. Whether someone has a fully formed idea or simply a feeling they're struggling to express, I want the creative process to feel open, collaborative and respectful of the story they're trying to tell.

Why I Write

I believe words are special, and I don't believe in using them simply to fill a space.

If there's nothing meaningful to say, I'd rather say nothing at all.

When I write about overcoming heartbreak, I want someone listening to feel that hope is possible. When I write about first love, I want them to remember the butterflies, the anticipation and the beautiful uncertainty of it all.

I want people to recognise something of themselves in my lyrics, whether it's an experience they've lived, a feeling they've forgotten or something they've never quite known how to explain.

For me, songwriting is about life in all its forms. The beautiful parts, the difficult parts and everything in between.

And perhaps most importantly, it's about preserving moments in time, giving a feeling somewhere to live long after the moment itself has passed.
